Educational
Consultants are trained professionals who possess extensive knowledge
of educational and treatment program options. This expertise, combined
with a caring approach to understand your child, helps families identify
a program or school, which is academically, socially or therapeutically
appropriate. They provide a unique perspective that requires them
to understand the student’s individual learning assets and
deficits, in addition to typical adolescent issues.
Ms. Kahn prides herself on her firsthand knowledge of educational facilities,
spending some 30 percent of her time visiting schools, special programs and colleges
throughout the year, keeping up-to-date on admissions policies, academic alternatives
and the campus environment. She attends conferences and organizational meetings
to stay abreast of current trends in the industry.
Ms. Kahn is not affiliated with any particular educational institution and therefore,
can provide an unbiased resource for families struggling with critical educational
decisions. She can point out the common mistakes to avoid when making recommendations
for placement.
The process involves communication with the student and family in various different
formats in order to accomplish the goals for each student: She will meet with
the family in person, as well as communicate by phone, email and fax, in order
to make sure her clients stay informed during the entire search process. Additionally,
Ms. Kahn serves as an advocate for your child, monitoring your child's progress
following his or her enrollment in a boarding school, receiving written or verbal
updates from the schools to let her know how that student is doing.
In working with high school students, while researching colleges, typically for
a year or more, Ms. Kahn develops a close relationship with that student, allowing
them to trust her judgment, enabling that student to accomplish his goals faster
and more efficiently.
Ms. Kahn accepts no fees, commissions or remunerations from educational institutions
for placing students.
Fees are paid by the client in exchange for services rendered; they are based
on the specific needs of that individual.
Ms. Kahn respects the integrity of the consulting relationship and all
relevant information is held in the strictest confidence.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

Initial interview with parents and the student to
identify the issues, concerns, goals and expectations the family has for
their student. Conversation about the types of schools or programs which
may be available, as well as the studentÐs academic, social and psychological
history is discussed. |

Independent conversation with the student to assess
the personality, interests and goals of that student. |
|
Evaluation of all psychoeducational or standardized testing. |
|
Referrals to other mental health or educational professionals,
ie. Psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, speech/language pathologists,
educational diagnosticians, or tutors as needed. |

Contact with important professional resources who have
interfaced with the family and student in the last two or three years. |

Research into appropriate school/program placement. Presentation
of a school list to the family of those schools which meet the student’s
needs, as well as provide information as to the school’s strengths
and weaknesses. |

Communication with schools and programs as deemed necessary. |
|
Ongoing consultation during the search process regarding
applications, visits, etc. |

Follow-up advice and support after students are enrolled. |
In an emergency situation, Ms. Kahn is able to arrange
placement within 24-48 hours at a program or school for troubled teens.
